Monitor any stock of any market in any country

Do you have such experiences: You want to buy or sell some kinds of stock, but you miss the best time because of you are busy ?

I do. I am telling you a true story, I am working in an IT company, from 9:00 to 5:00. As most of people, I also buy and sell stocks for extra bonus, but it's not easy to make profit every time. Although I can analyze some chart, data etc to make decision on what to buy and when to buy and sell, but I am not a professional investor, I have my own work, I cannot watch the screen and refresh my web browser all the day. So I often miss the best time to buy and sell.

How can I monitor the price while I am working ? An idea comes to my mind: bring a stock ticker to my desktop !

I created a software to do this, I called it Stock Price Monitor, that's a very small task bar stays on the bottom or top of my desktop, shows the real time prices of my stocks, and I still have almost all the screen to work. I just need a glance , I can know the current prices of my stocks.

One of my recent activities was on September 14. I bought 500 BIDU (IPO on August 5, 2005 ) on September 7 at price 79.58. On September 13, it closed at 113.59, I was so happy, and thought I could make a lot of money if the price continue went up. but the next day it opened at 87.22, I was shocked, How come it dropped so much, I decided to sell them on that day.

I was monitoring the price, and sold them at the price 93.36 (the highest is 94.21 on that day), It closed at 81.32 on that day.

So I earned :

(93.36-79.58) * 500 = 6890

If I did not monitor the price, I probably sold them at a lower price, assume it's 85, I could only earn :

(85-19.58) * 500 = 2710

probably lost :

(93.36-85) * 500 = 4180

Do you see the difference ?

Now I am telling you what is the Stock Price Monitor

You can see that it only occupies a very small portion of the screen, you still have almost all the screen to use for working. The stock prices on the watch bar refresh according to the setting. the refresh time can be set up 10 seconds. Also it tells the network status by displaying the traffic light ( up left corner of the symbol.)

How the Stock Price Monitor works

The Stock Price Monitor get the stock information from public web site just like you get quotes from web site like msn, yahoo, etc. Any web site which provides stock information can be used as an information source. This means you can monitor any stock of any stock market in any country as long as there's web site can provide the information.

For example, you can use msn.com to retrieve the information, go to htttp://www.moneycentral.msn.com, quote for Microsoft (symbol: MSFT) :

If you can see the price (the value inside the red circle), then you can use this web page as the information source. After you set this page as the resource. the Stock Price Monitor will grab the price value according to your setting.

One of the advantages is that the Stock Price Monitor does not rely on a specific resource, which you will not be able to get the information when it's not available. You can set more than one resource web site for Stock Price Monitor, when one of them is down, it can use others as an resource instead, so you will be always be able to view the result.

Now, I am showing how to use this tool.

Download the Stock Price Monitor, install on your PC, then launch the program.

If it's the first time to run on your computer, it will prompt you to use setup wizard to do configuration.

With the Setup Wizard, it's very easy to get it to work.

Let's skip the welcome window, you will see the general configuration window:

Here you have some options:

Automatic start when program launched

every time you launch the program, it will start to retrieve the price information automatically, otherwise you need to manually start the retrieving.

Show traffic light

It will show you the network status for each stock price retrieving. Green means the price is retrieved correctly,. Yellow means the information source is retrieved, but the price if not found. Red means you can not get the information source from internet.

Now we can add stocks to watch bar, Click Next button, then click "Add" Button,

The Stock Symbol should be correct, otherwise, you can not get the correct information. Now we add Microsoft, refresh 5 minutes.(300 seconds) . Check the option "Show in the watch bar", otherwise the stock will be added to your favorite list but not shown on the watch bar.

Continue to add YHOO, CSCO , EBAY as shown on following picture

Now We need to define the inform source. Let's use msn as the resource. type the URL moneycentral.msn.com on the next page, then click Next button, you will see:

You need to find the price before you click the Next button. Use the scrollbar to find the quote button or link, click to get the quote as the following:

Now, you are in the web page that shows the result of your quote. move scrollbar, make sure you find the price. At this time, you can click the Next button to the next page which you will tell the Stock Price Monitor where to grab the price.

When you get this page, you can see the Next button is disabled. Now , move you mouse cursor over the value of the price, click the left button of your mouse, you can see the price value goes to the box on the up right of the window. and the Next button is enabled .

Ok, the setup for the first stock is finished, click Next, it will pick up the information for the second stock in the list. same as above , click on the price value to grab it.

Continue to grab the price for the rest stocks until finish.

It's Done, If you did not select the option "Automatic start when program launched", you can right click on the watch bar, then chose start from the menu option. Now the Stock Price Monitor takes the price information to your desktop every 10 seconds (if you set the refresh time to 10 seconds )
